For more than 20 years, the people of Onicha Ukwuani in Delta State lived in total darkness without electricity. But thanks to Chief Emeke Ochonogor, their homes and streets are now lit up again.
To show their gratitude, the community honored him with the title “Omemma 1 of Onicha Ukwuani,” meaning “The Good One of Onicha Ukwuani.” The announcement was made by Chief George Ogwu, the leader of the five quarters of the town.

Community Leaders Praise Ochonogor’s Kindness
Chief Ogwu explained that the community wanted to thank Ochonogor for his kindness, especially because he did what the government had failed to do—restore electricity. He said this honor would encourage others to help their communities too.
The five quarters that now have power again are Amoji, Eweshi, Ibabu, Ike-Onicha, and Ugiliamai.
For years, the community had asked the government for help but got no response. Now, they are also pleading for better healthcare, schools, and clean water.

Speaking at the event, Comrade Ambrose Enuma, President-General of Onicha Ukwuani Youth, described the honor as “God’s doing” and praised Ochonogor as a role model for the youth.
“We are grateful that someone from our community has done something this great. It inspires us to work hard and give back to our people,” Enuma said.
Another speaker, Mr. Francis Oguegbu, a respected community elder, urged other wealthy individuals to follow Ochonogor’s example.
“This is what true leadership looks like—giving back without expecting anything in return,” Oguegbu noted. “If more people help like this, our communities will develop faster.”
Ochonogor Expresses Gratitude
Overwhelmed with joy, Chief Emeke Ochonogor said he never expected such an honor.
“It is a wonderful feeling to know that my people appreciate what I have done,” he said. “This encourages me to do even more in the future.”
The event was a grand celebration, attended by people from Onicha Ukwuani and neighboring communities like Ogume, Utagba Uno, and Iselegu. Dignitaries, cultural groups, and youth leaders all came together to celebrate the man who restored their light.
