NUJ Delta council chairmanship aspirant rejects result, give reasons

The former Secretary and chairmanship aspirant of the Nigerian Union of Journalist, (NUJ), Delta State Council, Comrade Churchill Oyovwe, on Tuesday, October 6, describing the state election results as ‘daylight robbery’.

He disclosed this in a statement he issued and was made available to newsmen in Asaba.

Comrade Oyowe said out of a total of 403 accredited votes cast, he scored 202 were his opponent got 201, even when there were no voided votes.

According to him,
“My votes were counted first, and by inference from the four other positions of the auditor, assistant secretary, secretary and vice-chairman, the total votes for the position of chairman should also logically be 403.

“However, the official committees and the caretaker and credentials committees added five extra ballot papers, making the total accredited voters for the chairmanship position 406.

“Now, if we have 403 accredited which was acknowledged by all officials and agents of the elections, where did the additional five voters come from?

“The convention is that having discovered that there was over-voting, the proper thing to do is to declare me winner since I scored the highest votes cast based on the total accredited voters. The worst-case scenario is to declare the contest inconclusive.

The Union’s Chairmanship aspirant also revealed that he was shocked when the president of the NUJ, Chris Isiguzo in a telephone chat ordered his opponent and others to be sworn in.

“Surprisingly, and against all known norms, the President of the NUJ, Chris Isiguzo, in a telephone chat, ordered that my opponent and others, be sworn-in.

He, therefore, rejected the result for the chairmanship election adding that he will perfect his next line of action to recover his stolen mandate in the union.
