Nigerians React as Senate Suspends Natasha – Is This Fair?

Senate Says Senator Natasha Was Suspended for Misconduct, Not Sexual Harassment Claims

The Nigerian Senate has explained why it suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying it was because of her behavior, not her claim that Senate President Godswill Akpabio sexually harassed her.

Senator Natasha had told a United Nations parliamentary meeting in New York on Tuesday, March 11, that she was suspended for six months after accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment. She asked for help, saying she was being treated unfairly.

However, in a letter signed by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate rejected her claim. The letter was read by Honorable Kafilat Ogbara, who represents Nigeria at the event.

The letter stated: “Senator Natasha-Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for gross misconduct and unruly behavior, not because of allegations of sexual harassment. The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria firmly rejects the false information being spread about her suspension. She was suspended only for breaking Senate rules and not for any other reason.”

Even though the Senate dismissed her claims, Honorable Ogbara called for an investigation into Natasha’s allegations against Akpabio. She also said the Senate followed its rules before suspending Natasha.

The suspension, which happened last week, has sparked debates across Nigeria. Many people are arguing about whether the punishment was fair.

Before her suspension, Natasha had accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and submitted a petition to the Senate. However, the lawmakers rejected her petition. When she tried again, they still refused to accept it and later suspended her.

Senator Natasha has promised to keep fighting against what she calls “injustice.” Meanwhile, Akpabio has denied the accusations, saying he has never harassed any woman.

The disagreement between Natasha and the Senate President started on February 20, 2025, after her seat in the Senate was changed during a meeting.
