The Nigerian Air Force has mistakenly bombed Buwari village in Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe state, a North-Eastern part of the country.
This is coming four years after the community of Rann, Borno, was similarly bomb in an operation the military said was a mistake and vowed a repeat will not occur.
It was gathered from People Gazette that dozens of the civilians were said to have been murdered and others injured after a military operation said to have happened by mistake.
It’s reported that an official said he was confused when the incident came because he started seeing dead bodies and injured persons arriving at the hospitals in Geidam and the capital Damaturu on Wednesday afternoon.
People Gazette reported that the actual civilian deaths were being examined as of early Thursday morning, but there were already fears that the numbers were in dozens.
According to the report, while reacting, the Nigerian Air Force was said to swiftly issue a statement alleging that the bombing did not occur. Meanwhile, the state government had opposed the military with a condolence message.
According to information received, the military had also barricades the scene of the attack Buwari, Yunusari LGA, and the two hospitals holding bodies and treating victims to prevent pictures from coming out.
However, the governor’s statement on the attack was released by his Press and Media Affairs Director-General, Mamman Mohammed, in a statement titled. Gov. Buni Mourns Victims of Air Strike, Assures Investigation of incident reads. “Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has commiserated with families of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate airstrike on Buwari village in Yunusari Local Government Area of the state.
He said although it could have been an accident or mistaken target, the government will join hands with the security agencies to unravel the root cause of the incident.
He also said governor Buni directed his special adviser on security affairs to liaise with the Nigerian Air Force and the Multi-National Joint Task Force to look into the unfortunate airstrike.
“Government will work closely with the security forces especially the Nigeria Airforce to establish what happened,” Governor Buni assured. “This is very important and necessary for us to guard against future occurrence and to safeguard the lives of our people.”
Also, he said that governor Buni assured the preparedness of his administration to work with all security forces to ensure the safety the state.
He further said that the governor has directed government hospitals in Geidam and Damaturu to offer free medical services to those who sustained injuries from the airstrike.
Again, he said the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been authorized to provide relief materials to cater to the immediate needs of the families of the deceased persons and other members of the community.
