Nigeria Immigration Launches Digital Passport Renewal – No More Embassy Visits Required!

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to introduce a Contactless Passport Application System, promising a more streamlined approach to passport renewals. The phased rollout will begin with Canada on November 1, followed by the UK, USA, and Italy on November 15. By December 1, the service will be available globally, including within Nigeria.

This new system is designed to eliminate the need for physical visits to immigration offices or embassies, allowing applicants to complete their passport requests entirely online, from application to biometrics. Many Nigerians abroad have already noted the convenience and speed of the system in Canada, with passport renewals reportedly processed smoothly. However, some Nigerians are cautious about how effectively this system will function in Nigeria itself.

One requirement of the new system is the resubmission of essential documents, such as birth certificates and Local Government Area (LGA) documents. Some applicants question the necessity of re-uploading these, as they believe their passport number and National Identification Number (NIN) should be sufficient for data retrieval.

The Contactless Biometrics Passport is a digital solution allowing Nigerians to apply for or renew their passports without visiting immigration offices or embassies. Using advanced technology, applicants can submit required documents and even conduct biometrics, through an online application.

Key Benefits of the Contactless Passport System

Remote Application: Apply from home, with no need to visit an embassy or immigration office.

Reduced Waiting Times: Complete the full application, including biometrics, online.

Minimized Paperwork: Fewer physical documents are required.

Flexible Timing: Submit your application whenever it suits you.

User-Friendly: The application is simple and straightforward.

Faster Processing: Expected quicker turnaround on passport requests.

Cost Savings: Avoid travel costs to embassies or immigration offices.

With this new system, the NIS hopes to provide a more efficient, user-friendly service for Nigerians both domestically and internationally.
