New Minimum Wage in Delta: What Governor Oborevwori Just Revealed

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has clarified that the state government is unable to implement the new minimum wage at this time due to the absence of a directive from the Federal Government. Speaking at a thanksgiving service in Asaba on Tuesday, Oborevwori explained that the state is awaiting the official template to ensure proper computation of the consequential adjustments related to the wage increase.

The event, held in honor of Mrs. Lyna Ocholor, Principal Secretary to the Governor and former Clerk of the Delta State House of Assembly, marked her retirement from civil service. Addressing attendees, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that while the state is committed to ensuring fair wages for workers, it must adhere to the national guidelines to avoid miscalculations.

“We are waiting for the chart of the new minimum wage because we don’t want to make any mistakes,” Oborevwori stated.

The governor also took the opportunity to express gratitude to the staff of the State Assembly, recalling the cooperative relationship during his tenure as Speaker of the 6th and 7th Assemblies. He noted that under his leadership, there were no strikes among the Assembly staff, attributing this to a mutual understanding and support.

Reflecting on his leadership, Oborevwori urged civil and public servants to maintain excellence in their roles. “Anywhere you are working, be good. As a civil or public servant, you must do what you will be remembered for,” he advised.

Mrs. Lyna Ocholor, in her remarks, expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori and the Assembly staff for their unwavering support throughout her time as Clerk. She credited her successful career to the teamwork and cooperation she experienced during her tenure.

The governor’s comments highlight the ongoing challenge of aligning state-level implementation of the new minimum wage with federal guidelines, while also celebrating the contributions of long-serving public officials like Mrs. Ocholor.
