The newly appointed Commissioner of Police for Delta State Command, Yemi John Oyeniyi, has officially assumed duty, pledging to prioritise the safety of lives and property while strengthening security across the state.
Speaking during his inaugural press briefing on March 1, 2026, in Asaba, CP Oyeniyi expressed gratitude to God and appreciated the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for entrusting him with the leadership of the command. He described his appointment as a significant responsibility and assured residents of his commitment to ensuring they feel safe in their homes, workplaces, and communities.
The police boss noted that Delta State remains a critical economic hub in Nigeria, with thriving commercial and industrial activities that require a strong and effective security framework. He acknowledged that while the state presents many opportunities, it also faces security challenges that must be addressed decisively to maintain peace and stability.
CP Oyeniyi paid tribute to his predecessor, Aina Adesola, and the command’s management team for their efforts in strengthening policing operations. He pledged to build on existing achievements while introducing new strategies to confront emerging security threats.
Highlighting key priorities, the Commissioner disclosed plans to restructure and properly coordinate all tactical units within the command in line with directives from the Inspector-General. According to him, the move is aimed at eliminating duplication of duties, improving accountability, and ensuring that police operations are intelligence-driven and result-oriented.
He emphasised that crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related activities would be met with swift and coordinated responses, adding that improved organisation of tactical teams would enhance the command’s ability to respond promptly and effectively.
On discipline and professionalism, CP Oyeniyi warned that there would be zero tolerance for misconduct, human rights abuses, and unprofessional behaviour among officers. He stressed that all personnel must operate within the law and treat members of the public with respect at all times.
The Commissioner further outlined plans to shift focus towards proactive policing by increasing police visibility in communities, strengthening intelligence gathering, and fostering closer collaboration with residents. He described security as a collective responsibility, calling for sustained cooperation with the Delta State Government, other security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth groups.
He urged residents to support the police by providing timely and credible information, noting that public cooperation is vital in combating crime. “If you see something, say something,” he advised.
CP Oyeniyi also acknowledged the role of the media in shaping public awareness and pledged to maintain a professional and constructive relationship with journalists in the state.
Addressing officers and men of the command, he emphasised that discipline, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law are non-negotiable standards expected of all personnel.
Reaffirming his commitment, the Commissioner stated that his goal is to serve the people diligently, uphold the law, and make Delta State safer for all residents.
