Ndokwa to Get Power Soon — Delta Govt

…Says Administration Committed to Lasting Power Solutions, Infrastructure Growth

ASABA, June 19, 2025 — The Delta State Government has assured residents of Ndokwa Nation that concrete steps are being taken to resolve the region’s longstanding electricity problem, following recent protests by residents under the “Light Up Ndokwa Nation” movement.

Addressing a press conference in Asaba on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said the Oborevwori-led administration is deeply concerned about the lack of power supply in the area and is intensifying efforts to restore electricity and rebuild damaged infrastructure.

Aniagwu, flanked by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, and Executive Assistant on Public Enlightenment (Projects and Policies), Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, acknowledged that power generation and distribution were, for many years, under the exclusive control of the Federal Government. However, with recent policy changes and liberalization of the power sector, states now have more leeway to intervene in electricity matters under certain conditions.

“For a very long time, power transmission was the exclusive preserve of the Federal Government. Even if power was generated, it had to be uploaded into the national grid for distribution. But with reforms beginning from the Jonathan administration and more recent liberalization, states now have some room to engage in generation and distribution,” Aniagwu said.

He noted that the Okpai Power Plant—a major facility located in Ndokwa—was not a state government project, but efforts are ongoing to ensure that the host communities benefit from its power output.

“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has mandated the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, who is from Ndokwa Nation, to spearhead engagements aimed at resolving issues with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), including outstanding liabilities inherited from the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN),” Aniagwu explained.

He also disclosed that criminal activities, including vandalism of power installations, have compounded the electricity challenge in the region. The absence of active power supply made it easier for miscreants to tamper with infrastructure, necessitating complete rehabilitation to ensure reliable reconnection.

State’s Commitment Beyond Power

Aniagwu emphasized that the Oborevwori administration has consistently shown commitment to the development of Ndokwa Nation, not just through efforts to restore power, but also in massive road and infrastructure projects across the region.

Among these, he listed the recent approval of the Aboh–Akarai Road project, a complex undertaking that includes a bridge and is estimated to cost over ₦29 billion. This project, he said, will enhance connectivity in Ndokwa East and improve transportation for communities previously cut off during the rainy season.

Other projects completed or ongoing in the region include:

  • Over 5km of Utagba-Uno–Eweshi Road
  • Over 5km Ndemili–Utagba-Uno Road
  • Over5km Inam–Abbi Road
  • Obi–Ibabu Road (completed)
  • Beneku Bridge, which replaces the use of pontoons and ferries
  • Amai–Aragba–Orogun Road (over 8km, still under construction)
  • Ofuegbe Street in Amai (completed)
  • Road projects connecting Obiaruku to the Umutu–Eku Road

“These projects are not just figures on paper; they are real, tangible developments that are transforming lives in Ndokwa. The government has invested significantly in road infrastructure to open up the region and improve the quality of life,” he said.

Call for Patience and Unity

Aniagwu appealed for patience from Ndokwa residents, assuring them that the state government is not indifferent to their plight.

“We urge our brothers and sisters in Ndokwa Nation to recognize these development strides. Governor Oborevwori’s administration is working tirelessly to make life better for all Deltans, including those in underserved communities,” he added.

He also warned against misinformation and attempts by some individuals to politicize the situation, urging the public to rely on facts and ongoing government efforts rather than narratives that do not reflect reality.

Oborevwori’s Broader Development Agenda

Highlighting the achievements of the Oborevwori administration in the past two years, Aniagwu said the government has recorded notable progress in infrastructure, human capital development, security, and economic growth.

“Delta is rich in oil and talent. This government is leveraging both to deliver services, empower individuals, and create opportunities. We’ve taken media partners across all 25 local government areas to inspect projects, both in upland and riverine communities,” he said.

He noted that more transformative projects were recently approved at the State Executive Council meeting and that the administration is fully committed to achieving more in the remaining two years of the current term.

“What you saw at the last EXCO meeting is just a glimpse. We’re working towards delivering even more impactful projects across sectors for our people,” Aniagwu assured.

The Delta State Government has reiterated its dedication to solving the Ndokwa electricity issue and improving infrastructure in the area. As efforts continue through dialogue with relevant stakeholders and investments in physical projects, the state urges the people to remain hopeful and united in support of ongoing development initiatives.
