Nigerian artist Kcee has fired back at fellow musician Flavour following claims that Kcee has been imitating his style. Although Flavour didn’t name anyone directly in his recent post, it was clear to Kcee that the comment was aimed at him. Responding on social media, Kcee firmly dismissed the notion that Flavour has exclusive rights over Igbo cultural music, insisting that no one owns the genre and that he has been in the music industry longer.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Kcee expressed that he and Flavour are “not on the same level” and advised Flavour to “pick his battles carefully.” He highlighted that his music is a celebration of Igbo heritage, one he shares without apology, and called out Flavour’s alleged attempts to control the narrative around Igbo music.
Kcee’s message emphasized the importance of authenticity and the freedom to express cultural heritage. He also implied that Flavour should focus on his achievements instead of diminishing others. The exchange reflects ongoing tensions within the music industry as artists navigate personal styles while sharing cultural influences.
Kcee’s full statement read:
“Bro, We are not on the same level. Pick your battles carefully. Stop trying to gatekeep Igbo culture. You’re not a Custodian. I’ve been in this game before you. It belongs to all. You don’t own this genre of music. My music celebrates our heritage, and I won’t apologize. In an ocean of things that matter. You’re like a needle. Get that right. People recognize authenticity. I’ll continue celebrating our culture unapologetically. Spend your energy on success, not diminishing mine.”
