Labour Party Crisis Deepens: Governor Otti, Others Suspended as Party Splits

The Labour Party (LP), one of Nigeria’s big political groups, is going through a serious fight among its members.

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, some leaders of the party announced that six important members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, were suspended from the party. This means they are no longer allowed to take part in any party meetings or activities for now.

The other people suspended are:

  1. Senator Ireti Kingibe
  2. Senator Darlington Nwokocha
  3. Hon. Victor Afam Ogene
  4. Hon. Amobi Ogah
  5. Hon. Seyi Sowunmi

The party said these people were punished for doing things that went against the rules of the Labour Party. This is called anti-party activities.

The Labour Party said it got these names from a five-man Disciplinary Committee (a group set up to investigate bad behaviour), which started working on May 2, 2025. The committee sent its report, and the National Executive Council (NEC)—the top decision-makers in the party—agreed to suspend them immediately.

At the same time, another part of the party, known as the Caretaker Committee, is also investigating Julius Abure, the man who says he is still the National Chairman of the party. The committee, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, is accusing Abure of:

  • Corruption (stealing or misusing money)
  • Controlling party funds without permission
  • Running the party like his own business
  • Refusing to follow proper election processes inside the party

Senator Usman said that Abure was not helping the party grow and was only interested in himself. To investigate Abure properly, the caretaker committee created a disciplinary panel (a special group) led by Senator Ireti Kingibe—ironically, one of the people just suspended by Abure’s group. The secretary of the panel is Peter Ameh.

Now, both sides of the party are accusing each other and taking actions like suspending members or starting investigations. One group says Abure is the problem. The other says people like Usman are not even real members of the party and have no right to take charge.

The party also said that Senator Usman is not an official member but just a supporter of their former presidential candidate in the 2023 election. They also accused her of being involved in corruption herself, saying she made a secret deal with the government agency called EFCC and owns many expensive properties.

Even with all this drama, the caretaker committee said they will fix the problems in the party and hold fresh elections soon so that the right leaders can be chosen properly.

In short, the Labour Party is divided into two groups, each blaming the other. While one side is suspending big members, the other is planning to investigate the party chairman. Only time will tell how this fight will end.
