Izeze and FOOSTODEY Join Forces to Alleviate Hardship with N35 Million Empowerment in Ughievwen Kingdom

In a bid to address the growing economic challenges faced by residents of Ughievwen Kingdom, Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, in collaboration with his allies in the FOOSTODEY initiative, disbursed over N35 million to benefit women, students, and the local vigilante in Ughelli South Local Government Area.

The empowerment program, held at Izeze’s residence in Oginibo, saw 200 students receive N25,000 each, while 101 small-scale traders from 34 communities were awarded N50,000 each to boost their businesses. The local vigilante was also strengthened with the provision of five motorcycles and a Sienna bus to enhance their security operations.

Speaking at the event, Izeze explained that the initiative was driven by the need to cushion the effects of the ongoing economic hardship exacerbated by federal policies. “The recent fuel price hike, the removal of fuel subsidies, and the ripple effects of inconsistent federal policies have made life particularly difficult for our people,” he said.

He highlighted that Ughelli South, being predominantly agrarian, relies heavily on transportation to get farm produce to markets across the state, which has become increasingly challenging due to rising costs. “For us, this is not about personal gain, but about letting our people know that the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is working, and we are feeling its impact,” he added.

Izeze further noted that Governor Oborevwori had already paid bursaries to over 30,000 Delta State students and that the empowerment was his way of complementing the Governor’s efforts. “If I love my boss, I must make sacrifices to support him. Faith without works is dead,” he remarked, adding that the N35 million raised came from the support of private sector friends who shared in his vision.

Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerovwo Tonukari, lauded Izeze’s efforts, commending him for supporting Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which focuses on education, security, and economic growth. Tonukari noted, “This gesture aligns with the Governor’s broader goal and demonstrates the dedication of his team to making a positive impact.”

National Coordinator of FOOSTODEY, Elvis Ahior, represented by Patrick Erhubetine, also emphasized the importance of the empowerment initiative. “The economic policies from the centre have left many unable to cope with the rising cost of living. By partnering with Izeze, we are taking action to support the MORE Agenda’s focus on enhanced peace and security,” Erhubetine said while presenting the motorbikes and vehicle to the local vigilante group.

Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Ernest Ideh, praised Izeze for his continued support to students and women in the local government, noting the significance of the empowerment program. “This is a massive show of support for the people of Ughelli South, and we are grateful for the Commissioner’s efforts to uplift the community,” Ideh stated.

Comrade Monday Wiska, President of the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), also recognized Izeze’s contributions to education. During the ceremony, Wiska presented a certificate of commendation to Izeze for his dedication to student welfare, particularly for his financial support through the bursary program.

The event was graced by several notable figures, including the Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Hon. Peter Uviejitobor; Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Marierie; former DESOPDEC Commissioner, Chief Kent Okiem; and Olorogun Andrew Desi, among others.

Izeze concluded his speech by reaffirming his commitment to the people of Ughelli South, stating, “This is something we have done in the past, and it is something we will continue to do. The essence of being in public office is to drive the development of our communities and uplift our people.”

The program not only provided financial relief but also served as a reminder of the power of collaboration and leadership in addressing the pressing needs of communities during challenging times.
