Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Wizkid has finally reacted to the escalating online feud involving his fans and Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, a dispute that has sparked intense debate across social media and the Nigerian music industry.
The controversy began last week after Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, accused Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, of disrespecting his late father’s legacy by comparing Fela’s influence with Wizkid’s global success.
The comments triggered days of heated exchanges online, with supporters of both artists clashing over issues of legacy, relevance, generational influence and respect within Afrobeat and contemporary Nigerian music.
On Tuesday night, Wizkid took to his Instagram story to respond for the first time, openly expressing anger at Seun Kuti and reacting to comments circulating online.
The singer initially shared a viral video of a woman speaking in Yoruba, in which she criticised Seun Kuti’s recent online conduct. In the video, the woman questioned why members of Seun’s family had not intervened, accusing him of spending several days on social media engaging in abusive exchanges and attacking people’s families.
She also argued that Wizkid’s international success has helped introduce a new generation of listeners to Afrobeat and renewed interest in Fela Kuti’s music, insisting that modern Nigerian artists have played a role in sustaining the genre’s global relevance.
In the video, the woman accused Seun Kuti of failing to uphold the values associated with his father’s legacy and expressed disappointment in what she described as his behaviour online.
Shortly after sharing the video, Wizkid made a series of direct posts aimed at Seun Kuti, using harsh language and asserting his dominance and influence in the global music scene.
