IGP Bans Officers from Carrying Guns in Plain Clothes

The head of Nigeria’s police, Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun, has given a new order: No more policemen carrying big guns while wearing regular clothes (mufti).

He announced this rule during an online meeting with senior police officers, explaining that policemen must act professionally and respect people’s rights.

Why Was This Decision Made?

People have complained a lot about police officers in plain clothes carrying rifles, which can be scary and confusing for ordinary citizens. Many worry that this practice could lead to misuse of power and abuse of people’s rights.

The police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the IGP will not tolerate any officer breaking this rule, and there will be serious consequences for any violations.

What Does This Mean for the Police?

  • All officers must wear proper uniforms when carrying rifles.
  • Special police teams (tactical squads) must follow proper dress codes and rules.
  • Cases must not be transferred to another police unit without official approval from the IGP. This prevents delays and unnecessary stress for people involved in legal matters.
  • All police officers must work together to protect the good name of the force and stop any bad behavior.

The goal of this new rule is to make people trust the police more and feel safer.
