On Wednesday, a student of Niger Delta University (NDA) identified as James Okunmakpeye was shot dead at close range by a 300-level accounting student name African Innocent while receiving lecture.
It was gathered that Okunmakpeye was standing by the door of the lecture hall in the Faculty of Management Science in Wilberforce Island when he was shot at close range and dies on the spot.
The death of Okunmakpeye however, caused pandemonium in the institution as his coursemates and lecturer ran away in fear while his lifeless body was left in a pool of blood.
Narrating the incident, Mr. Inezi Idoni, the Public Relations Officer of the institution confirmed the incident stating that the management has commenced an investigation and had also contacted the relevant security agencies.
According to Idoni while narrating the incident stated that the student was killed during lecture hours, there was a lecturer in the class at the time of the incident. The deceased was shot by the door of the lecture hall.
He explained that the deceased was late to lecture and he was asked to come into the hall to offer reasons for his lateness and someone came from behind and shot him.
He said, the culprit after carrying out the act, ran towards the Ogobiri side of the institution where the perimeter fencing has failed and escaped.
He also said they are using this opportunity to call on the state government to assist the institution in completing the perimeter fencing to assist in the security of lives and properties on the campus.
However, the spokesperson for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat also confirmed the incident stating that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the death of the student, adding that the command had mobilized men to hasten the security in the school.
The police spokesperson, while speaking stated that when they were alerted, a police team responded swiftly and one suspect, a 300-level Accounting student identified as African Innocent was arrested.
Mainwhile, Butswat stated that the victim, James Okunmakpeye was shot in the head at close range and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He also added that they have reinforced security on the campus, adding that, they will arrest more suspects that are involved in the murder.
