How 25-year-old pregnant woman gave birth to nine babies

A 25-year-old woman, Halima Cisse, from Mali has given birth to nine babies at once in Ain Borja clinic in Casablanca, Morocco.

It was gathered that the Malian woman gave birth to the babies in the cesarean section on Tuesday after being sent there for special care by the Malian government because hospitals in Mali are ill-equipped to provide adequate care for these exceptional multiple pregnancies.

According to the Mali minister of health, the woman gave birth to five girls and four boys after expecting seven and they are all doing well at the Moroccan clinic where the nonuplet was born, stating that, it is the first time on record that a woman had given birth to nine surviving babies at once.

However, the Director of the Casablanca clinic, Youssef Alaoui told Morocco State TV that when been contacted by the Malian doctors about the case a month and a half ago mentioned that they were not expecting nine babies.

He said, Cisse, gave birth prematurely at 30 weeks and is now in a stable condition after heavy bleeding for which she was given a blood transfusion.

He said the cesarean was ordered after Cisse had birth pains stating that the babies weigh between 500 grams and one kilogram (1.1 and 2.2 pounds).

Also, Alaoui told Associated Press that he was aware Cisse had not used fertility treatments, adding that the Malian health ministry did not provide any other information about the pregnancy or the birth.

Meanwhile, Associated Press had reported that Medical staff checked their status regularly in the neonatal ward wallpapered with cartoon characters, noting that the babies were seen wiggling their hands and feet inside the incubator on Wednesday in the Casablanca clinic, Ain Borja.

The Guinness Book of Records said in an email to the AP on Wednesday that it’s the current record for most living births at once is right and that it is verifying the Morocco birth, adding that the current holder of the Guinness record is American Nadya Suleman, who gave birth to eight premature but otherwise healthy children in 2009.
