Hisbah Enforces Sharia Law, Closes Betting Shop in Kano

The Hisbah police in Kano State have closed a sports betting shop as part of their efforts to enforce Islamic rules during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting.

The officers shared pictures of the raid on social media, showing them sealing off the shop. According to Sheikh Mujahideen Aminudeen, the Deputy Commander of Hisbah, gambling is not allowed under Sharia law, which Kano follows.

He expressed concern that some Muslims were still engaging in gambling during Ramadan, a time meant for prayer, fasting, and self-discipline.

Kano State is one of 12 northern Nigerian states that follow Sharia law, which bans gambling, alcohol, and other activities considered against Islamic teachings.

Other Ramadan Crackdowns

This raid comes just after Hisbah arrested 20 Muslims for eating or drinking in public during fasting hours. Another five people were arrested for selling food in the daytime when fasting was expected.

Hisbah officers say they only enforce rules on Muslims, not on people from other religions. They also take action against people with “indecent” haircuts, those wearing short clothes, and tricycle drivers who mix male and female passengers.

During Ramadan, Hisbah gets calls from people reporting violations, and they act quickly. Last year, some people caught eating in public were released after promising to complete the fast. However, this year, Hisbah says they will enforce stricter punishments.
