Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State – April 10, 2025: Senator Ned Nwoko has accused Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of working against the proposed creation of Anioma State, claiming that the governor is afraid the new state may affect his interests.
Speaking at an event held in Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area, the lawmaker representing Delta North said the governor has gone as far as warning his aides not to support the idea. According to Nwoko, this fear has led the governor to influence many of his team members to reject the project.

“He’s afraid of the creation of Anioma State because it might affect him personally,” Nwoko said. “He warned his aides to stay away from it, and now many of them have turned against the plan—not because it’s bad for the people, but because of one man’s fear.”
The senator made the remarks at a program organized by the APC Women Support Group in partnership with Rita Daniels’ Single Parenthood and Girl Child Initiative, and Regina Daniels’ Charity and Development Foundation.

Nwoko said the proposal to create Anioma State has already passed its second reading in the Senate and is currently undergoing public hearings. The next step, he explained, would be a third reading before the bill is sent to President Bola Tinubu for approval.
He emphasized that Anioma State would bring more benefits than harm, such as more political representation, development, and opportunities. “We will have two governors, two deputies, more lawmakers, and more attention on our people’s needs,” he said.
Nwoko, who recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the move was necessary to secure federal support for the project. “I met with President Tinubu and other APC leaders. They told me that if I wanted Anioma State to become a federal priority, I should join APC. So I did. All APC members on my committee support Anioma State,” he said.
He added that past leaders from Delta North, including former senators and governors, were also too afraid to push for the creation of the state. “They didn’t want the state to be shared. They didn’t see the bigger picture,” he noted.
Despite opposition, Nwoko declared that nothing will stop the creation of Anioma State—not even the governor’s fear. “Anioma State is for the people, and no amount of resistance will stop what’s coming,” he concluded.
