ASABA, Nigeria – June 25, 2025 — Delta State students have emerged national champions at the 2025 National Basic Education Debate Championship, securing the honour of representing Nigeria at the prestigious World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar.
The national competition, organized by the President’s Schools Debate Nigeria, brought together outstanding young debaters from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Participants showcased exceptional skills in public speaking, critical thinking, teamwork, and knowledge of contemporary issues.
Delta State’s winning team consists of:
- Wisdom Chukwuma – Government College, Ughelli
- Otorvo Uyoyou – Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun
- Abraham Honour – Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka
- Ekhamateh Splendour – Government Model Secondary School, Asaba
- Alika Daniel – Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale
The team stood out through their compelling arguments, fluent delivery, and deep understanding of national and global topics. After multiple rounds of intense debate, the Delta State team outperformed their peers to claim the national title.
Governor Oborevwori Celebrates Students’ Victory
At a special reception held at the Government House, Asaba, on Tuesday, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori hailed the students as shining examples of Delta State’s intellectual excellence.
“I am truly delighted by the intellectual depth and eloquence demonstrated by these students. They are true ambassadors of Delta State,” Governor Oborevwori said.

He emphasized that the students’ success reflects the result of deliberate investments in education by his administration, including the renovation of schools, recruitment and training of teachers, provision of learning materials, and support for extracurricular activities.
“When I see children of this age speak so intelligently, I am very happy,” he said. “These are not children trained abroad—they are homegrown talents, nurtured here in Delta State. It shows how much we value education.”
Full Sponsorship for Qatar Trip
In line with the state’s MORE Agenda (Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security), Governor Oborevwori announced that the Delta State Government would fully sponsor the team’s trip to Qatar.
“Delta State is proud to sponsor your international trip without hesitation. Representing Nigeria on the global stage means you’ve already made us proud. We are equally committed to supporting other talented Deltans who can positively represent the state,” the Governor stated.
He encouraged the students to be of good conduct, listen to their coaches, and seize the opportunity for international learning and exposure.
“As you embark on this trip, we expect you to conduct yourselves honourably, learn as much as you can, and return with success. By God’s grace, you will come back victorious in Jesus’ name,” he prayed.
Reaffirming the state’s resilience and drive, Governor Oborevwori said:
“Delta no dey carry last. You are champions already, and I believe you will achieve even greater things at the world competition. This debate is not just an event—it is a foundation for your future.”
He also praised the students’ parents for their dedication, urging the team to make their families and the state proud.
Education Officials Commend Team’s Excellence
Also present at the event, Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, congratulated the team for their brilliance and described their achievement as well-deserved.
Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere, expressed appreciation to the Governor for providing the necessary support and logistics that contributed to the students’ success.
“The children have made Delta State very proud,” Mariere said. “We promise to give our best as we prepare them for the World Championship in Qatar.”

Speaking on behalf of the team, Wisdom Chukwuma, the team leader, expressed gratitude to the Governor and the state government for their support throughout the competition.
He said: “Thank you, Your Excellency, for the upgraded school facilities, learning materials, and encouragement you’ve given us. We promise to do our best and make Delta State and Nigeria proud on the world stage.”
