The Federal Government has announced the appointment of Dr. John Nwabueze as the country’s Tax Ombudsman. The appointment, released in a statement by the Presidency on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, was made in line with the provisions of the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025.
According to the statement, the appointment is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s tax and revenue administration system.
Dr. Nwabueze, who hails from Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State, brings wide professional experience to the role. He previously served as the Managing Partner of a tax advisory firm, Technical Adviser to the Joint Senate Committees on the Federal Capital Territory and Finance, and Technical Adviser to the Chief Economic Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He holds a Doctor of Business Administration (Finance) from Walden University, Minneapolis; a Master’s Degree in Accounting from Strayer University, Washington, D.C.; and dual Bachelor’s Degrees in Accounting and Mathematics from the University of Jos.
The statement noted that the Office of the Tax Ombudsman is established to increase public trust in the tax system by ensuring fairness, resolving disputes between taxpayers and revenue authorities, and safeguarding citizens from arbitrary or abusive practices by tax officials.
The office will be responsible for receiving and addressing complaints related to: Taxes and levies, Regulatory fees, Customs and excise duties, And other revenue matters.
President Tinubu congratulated Dr. Nwabueze and expressed confidence in his ability to discharge his duties with “integrity, diligence, and utmost professionalism.”
