A misleading video shared on Facebook has caused tension in Warri South Local Government Area (LGA), leading to calls for the arrest of those spreading false information.
On Saturday, March 1, 2025, a man named Yemi Otuedon posted a video claiming that some Urhobo youths from Otovwodo, Agbarha-Warri Kingdom, had attacked and kidnapped a man named Atigbi Gabriel Ponunu and his 7-year-old son. Ponunu said he was released after an “understanding” but hinted that someone else might not have been so lucky.
The video spread quickly, causing anger among some Itsekiri residents, who threatened to retaliate against Urhobo communities. This led to heated arguments online, raising fears of possible violence in the area.
However, after further investigation, many Urhobo residents denied the claims, saying Otuedon and Ponunu were spreading lies to cause trouble. They accused the two of having a history of stirring up conflict with false information.
Urhobo Leaders Speak Out
The Urhobo Federated Council (UFC), a group representing Urhobo people, strongly condemned the video. They said it was an attempt to create division and disrupt peace in Warri South. The UFC also defended the people of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom and their king, calling the accusations “blatant lies.”
The UFC has asked the Delta State Government and security agencies to arrest and prosecute Otuedon, Ponunu, and their associates for trying to incite violence. They also warned that if any Urhobo person is harmed because of the false claims, those responsible for the video will be held accountable.
Bigger Concerns
The UFC believes this incident is part of a larger plan to create chaos in Delta State and undermine the state’s governor, Sheriff Oborevwori.
What’s Happening Now?
While the situation is calm for now, many residents are worried and want security agencies to act quickly to prevent further trouble. People are being urged to avoid spreading rumours and to focus on maintaining peace in the community.
This incident shows how dangerous false information on social media can be and why it’s important to always check facts before sharing anything online.
