Emir of Kano, Ukala Royalty, and Dr. Jibunoh Honour Mandela with Tree-Planting in Asaba

Asaba, Delta State — October 18, 2025: The Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness Aminu Ado Bayero, paid a historic visit to the Nelson Mandela Gardens of 95 Trees in Asaba, where he was warmly received by Dr. Newton Jibunoh, popularly known as the Desert Warrior and Founder of FADE (Fight Against Desert Encroachment).

The event, filled with color, culture, and royal presence, saw the Emir join other traditional leaders, including His Royal Majesty Igwekanu Clement Ifeanyiachukwu Ejiofor, the King of Ukala Kingdom, and Chief Sunday Okonta, the Odogwu of Akwukugbo Kingdom and Ede of Ukala, to plant trees as symbols of unity, environmental preservation, and legacy.

The atmosphere was serene yet deeply symbolic, as dignitaries and guests reflected on the importance of protecting nature and honoring Africa’s great leaders, particularly Nelson Mandela, whose name the garden bears.

Speaking at the event, His Royal Majesty Igwekanu Clement Ifeanyiachukwu Ejiofor described the ceremony as a gesture of respect and continuity.

“We are all observers in this cause,” the king said. “Planting trees today is a symbol of dignity, integrity, and dedication — honoring a man who sacrificed for humanity, not just for his country. Nelson Mandela transformed deserts and forests into livable environments, and we are here to celebrate that legacy.”

The Ukala monarch also explained the cultural meaning behind the tree he planted.

“Just as a child is named at birth, these trees are planted and named to mark a new beginning. The one we planted today is called the Ukala Tree, representing the great people of Ukala Kingdom and our respect for Mandela’s legacy.”

Adding his voice, Chief Sunday Okonta, the Odogwu of Akwukugbo Kingdom, praised the initiative and linked the act of tree planting to Africa’s spirit of greatness.

“Nelson Mandela’s life was about sacrifice and service to humanity,” Chief Okonta said. “The environment we see here didn’t appear overnight; it took vision, hard work, and intelligence to create. The tree I planted represents greatness — a symbol of warriors who protect their land and people.”

In his remarks, Dr. Newton Jibunoh, the Desert Warrior, expressed humility and gratitude for the royal presence, describing the day as both historical and inspiring.

“This is a very humbling experience,” Dr. Jibunoh said. “What began as a small idea has grown into something greater. The monuments here carry deep historical value. The late father of our royal guest, the former Emir, visited this site many years ago, and today, his son continues that legacy by planting his own tree.”

He explained that every dignitary who visits the Nelson Mandela Gardens plants a tree that bears their name — a practice aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and combating climate change.

“Each tree represents life and contribution to nature,” he continued. “We want future generations to grow up knowing that when they were young, they planted something that helps the planet. It’s about connecting people to nature and teaching the importance of giving back to the earth.”

Dr. Jibunoh concluded with a heartfelt prayer, urging all participants to see themselves as part of history.

“When Nelson Mandela planted trees in Lagos years ago, he set a legacy in motion. Today, his son continues that legacy here in Asaba. This is not just a ceremony — it is a reminder that we are all planting history.”

The event ended with photographs, cultural displays, and a renewed call for Nigerians to support environmental preservation while honoring Africa’s heroes through meaningful action.
