The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Angel Oyeghe, the self-proclaimed archbishop and founder of Faith Healing Ministry in Warri, following a viral video showing members of her church spraying naira notes on a live cow during a service.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the EFCC said Oyeghe was arrested on Tuesday after a viral video showed several individuals under her supervision spraying naira notes on a live cow during a church programme. The video, which circulated widely on social media, sparked public outrage and drew the attention of the anti-graft agency.
According to the EFCC, Oyeghe’s actions violate Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which prohibits the abuse, mutilation, and improper handling of Nigeria’s currency.
The commission said the arrest was carried out by operatives of its Benin Zonal Directorate, who also launched a search for other individuals involved in the act.
“The Commission is on the trail of arresting other suspects, as their action contravenes the provision of Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007,” the statement read.
According to the EFCC, the cleric has already given important information to investigators and will be formally charged in court once the ongoing investigation is completed.
The commission also reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing laws against currency abuse and cautioned the public to refrain from acts that deface or misuse the naira.
