Asaba, Delta State – The leadership of the Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku (DSPG) Alumni Association, led by their President, Comrade Onowakpo Ufuoma Festus, paid a courtesy visit to Senator Ighoyota Amori, the Chief Adviser to the Governor of Delta State, on August 5, 2025, at his office in Asaba.
The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the alumni executive team and raise important concerns about their former school. The team thanked Senator Amori for giving them an audience and expressed their commitment to working with the government, especially in areas that involve education and youth development.
What They Discussed
The alumni raised six major issues affecting DSPG:
- Leadership Crisis: They told Senator Amori that there’s a management problem in the school that’s causing instability and affecting both staff and students. They pleaded with the government to step in and help restore peace.
- Understaffing: Many departments don’t have enough lecturers or administrative staff. This is making it hard for students to get proper supervision and good quality education. They asked the government to approve new job openings and support training for current staff.
- Alumni Secretariat Project: The alumni are building a new secretariat to help connect past students with the school. They asked for government support, both in funding and recognition, so the secretariat can help mentor and empower graduates.
- Access to Empowerment Programs: They requested that DSPG alumni, especially young graduates, be included in government programs such as entrepreneurship funding, digital skills training, and job opportunities in public service.
- Bad Roads on Campus: The alumni described how bad the internal roads in DSPG have become. The bad roads make movement difficult, pose safety risks, and damage the school’s image. They want the government to include the school in upcoming infrastructure projects.
- Stronger Partnership with Government: Overall, they expressed a desire to work more closely with the state government to ensure DSPG remains a strong, reliable institution for future students.
Senator Amori Responds
Senator Amori praised the alumni for caring so much about the polytechnic and encouraged them to keep engaging constructively. He said that instead of focusing on blame, the most important thing now is to find solutions and move the institution forward.
He also reminded the group that DSPG was established during his time as Commissioner for Education under former Governor James Ibori, and it was part of a bigger plan to expand access to higher education in Delta State.
“I’m proud of what DSPG stands for,” Senator Amori said. “The goal was to make it a world-class institution, and we must continue to work together to achieve that dream.”
He promised to take their concerns to the appropriate authorities and assured them that their issues align with the M.O.R.E. Agenda of the current Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. The M.O.R.E. Agenda stands for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.
The meeting ended positively, with the alumni asking Senator Amori to become the “father” of the alumni association. They left with a renewed hope that the future of DSPG would be brighter with the government’s support.
