DSPG Alumni Holds AGM in Asaba, Flags Off Fundraising for Secretariat Project

Asaba, Delta State – September 27, 2025 — The atmosphere was filled with excitement on Saturday as the Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku (DSPG) Alumni Association held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Kim Royal Hotel, Asaba. The meeting brought together executives, Board of Trustees (BoT) members, and other alumni to discuss issues affecting both the association and the institution.

One of the major issues addressed was the association’s constitution, which members said had “grey areas” that needed to be fixed. To this end, a Constitutional Committee was set up and given two months to complete the amendment process.

The highlight of the AGM was the flag-off of a fundraising campaign for the construction of the Alumni Secretariat. Excited members, including executives, BoT representatives, and other alumni, made pledges in support of the project.

Speaking at the event, the National President of the DSPG Alumni Association, Comrade Ufuoma Festus Onowakpor, thanked members for their sacrifices and support during the July 5, 2025 elections that brought the new executives to office.

He highlighted some of the association’s achievements within three months of assuming leadership. According to him, one of the first promises fulfilled was the restoration of running water on campus.

“When we met with the Rector and management staff, we were told there was a borehole on campus that was not working due to a ₦210,000 challenge,” Comrade Ufuoma explained. “Even without accessing funds at that time, our Financial Secretary pledged to pay the amount so the water could flow again. We later found out that someone had already been paid that same sum to fix it, but the job was left undone while the school was spending more money buying water for hostels. We stepped in, ensured the job was done, and today water is running.”

He also revealed that the Alumni had successfully retrieved and taken control of the Capital Projects Account, which had a balance of six million, four hundred and fifty thousand naira (₦6,450,000) when the signatures were changed.

Fundraising and VIP Engagements

On the Secretariat Project, the Alumni President explained that the association realized it could not rely solely on the funds in its account to complete the building. This led to a series of familiarisation visits to VIPs and government officials.

During one of such visits, they met the Chief Political Adviser to the Delta State Governor, Chief Ighoyota Amori, who assisted in linking them up with the Governing Council Chairman of DSPG, Hon. Paul Adingupu.

At the meeting, the Alumni presented the blueprint of the Secretariat Project. Hon. Adingupu, impressed by their plans, pledged ₦1 million to support the project. The Alumni President confirmed at the AGM that the pledge was redeemed and the funds were immediately put to use for clearing the Secretariat site and carrying out sand-filling as part of the foundation work.

Comrade Ufuoma described these achievements as “only the beginning,” noting that the association was determined to pursue more progress for both the Alumni body and the institution.

Looking Ahead, members at the AGM expressed excitement over the Secretariat fundraising and pledged to continue supporting the leadership in achieving its goals. The President assured that the association would remain focused on transparency, accountability, and genuine development.
