DESTMA DG: ‘Oborevwori Deserves 95%’ — Advocates Safer Roads with Helmets

Asaba, May 26, 2025 — As Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori gets ready to celebrate two years in office on May 29, one of his top officers says the governor has done an excellent job.

The Director General of the Delta State Traffic Management Agency (DESTMA), Hon. Benjamin Okiemute, said the governor deserves a 95% score for all the good work he’s done to develop Delta State. He shared his thoughts during a chat with journalists in his office in Asaba, the state capital.

“Governor Oborevwori is Doing Very Well,” Says Traffic Boss

Hon. Okiemute, who has been in charge of the traffic agency for just five months, said he has seen big changes in the state. He explained that the governor continued from where the former governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, stopped, and took things even further.

He said, “The governor is doing great. He hasn’t borrowed money, yet he is still building and developing the state. That’s something to celebrate.”

Making Roads Safer for Everyone

Hon. Okiemute said his job is to make sure that people drive safely and follow the rules on the road. He explained that DESTMA’s motto is “Enforcing a disciplined driving culture”, which means teaching people to drive properly.

One of the biggest changes they are working on is making sure everyone who rides a motorcycle wears a helmet.

He said, “Wearing a helmet can save lives, and we want everyone—riders and passengers—to stay safe. I’ve been talking with people in China about getting affordable helmets that we can give or sell at lower prices.”

Why Helmets Are So Important

Some people in Delta State are scared of wearing helmets because of a story from years ago in a place called Agbor. They believed that people wearing helmets disappeared. But Mr. Okiemute says that’s just a rumor, and it’s not true.

“Bike riders are willing to wear helmets, but some passengers are afraid because of old stories,” he said. “But now, we are working on helping people understand that helmets protect you—they don’t harm you.”

He added that in other places, like the military, when rules are made, people follow them without question. But in a democracy like ours, they want to listen to people and help solve problems together.

More Work to Be Done

Even though he’s new to the job, the DG said he is ready to help Governor Oborevwori achieve the MORE Agenda, which stands for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.

He said DESTMA is not just watching the roads in Delta, but also helping with federal roads that pass through the state. “We want to be like LASTMA in Lagos—strong, helpful, and respected.”

He promised to keep working hard, share new ideas, and help the governor make Delta roads safer for everyone.

In Summary:

DESTMA boss says Governor Oborevwori has done a great job in 2 years.

He gives him a 95% score for development.

DESTMA is working to make roads safer.

Helmets will soon be a must for all motorbike riders and passengers.

The agency wants to teach people to drive safely and avoid accidents.

Old rumors about helmets are not true—helmets help save lives.

Remember:
If you ride a bike, always wear your helmet. It can save your life, and it’s now the law in Delta State. Safety first!
