In a defining moment for Delta State, the Obi (Prof.) Chike Edozien Secretariat has been awarded the title of Nigeria’s Most Iconic Corporate Building, a recognition bestowed by the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) at their national conference in Abuja. This prestigious honour celebrates not only architectural brilliance but also a significant milestone in Delta State’s infrastructure development.
At the heart of this achievement is Arc. Kester Ifeadi, a Delta-born architect and the mastermind behind the award-winning design. With decades of experience and numerous landmark projects to his name, Ifeadi’s vision for the Secretariat transformed a practical necessity into a symbol of Delta’s forward-thinking governance. For a state that has operated without a central secretariat for over 33 years, this building signifies more than just an administrative hub; it is a reflection of efficient governance, financial prudence, and local talent.
When Delta State, under the leadership of former Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, embarked on this ambitious project, critics were skeptical. However, the government’s aim to bring all ministries, departments, and agencies under one roof—while eliminating rent costs and streamlining operations—proved both strategic and transformative. Completed in record time, the eight-floor structure houses over 30 ministries and accommodates more than 5,000 workers daily, complete with modern facilities such as clinics, business centers, banks, and restaurants.
One of the biggest challenges was the lack of suitable land in the city center for such a large project. Arc. Ifeadi’s solution was a single-structure design, spanning 45,000m², that maximized space while ensuring functionality and comfort. It is now the largest single-building state secretariat in Nigeria, powered by independent electricity, CCTV surveillance, and advanced facilities, making it a beacon of administrative efficiency.
The award from the NIA—an esteemed body with a commitment to superior design and safety standards—elevates both Ifeadi’s career and Delta State’s profile. Ifeadi, who also designed the Asaba International Airport, has long been known for his creativity and dedication to the craft, but this recognition places him among the top architects shaping Nigeria’s future.
While Arc. Ifeadi and his firm, Contemporary Group Limited, are the direct recipients of this award, the real winner is Delta State. This project, and the accolades it brings, reflect the state’s commitment to excellence, local content, and sustainable development. The Delta State Secretariat stands as a testament to what visionary governance and homegrown talent can achieve.
