Delta Sports Revival: Ughelli Stadium Next in Line After Warri

In a bold move to make Delta State a top destination for sports in Nigeria and beyond, the Delta State Government has started work on upgrading sports facilities across the state—beginning with the Ughelli Stadium.

This was revealed during an inspection tour by the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Hon. Onoriode Oborevwori, who said the Ughelli Stadium will undergo a major transformation similar to what is currently happening at the Warri City Stadium.

Oborevwori was warmly welcomed by the Chairman of the Ughelli Northern Football Council, Mr. Onome Ikrechero, along with other local sports officials and stakeholders.

“We are not just rehabilitating stadiums; we are investing in the future of our youth and setting the stage for Delta State to become a beacon of sports excellence in Africa,” Oborevwori said.

A Bigger Vision for Sports in Delta

The renovation of Ughelli Stadium is part of a larger plan to build world-class sports infrastructure across the state. This move is designed to help young athletes develop their skills, give them proper facilities to train, and also allow the state to host major sporting events.

Delta State is already known for hosting important competitions. The Warri City Stadium, for example, has hosted international events such as the 2006 Women’s African Football Championship and the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Now, the state wants to bring that same level of excellence to Ughelli and other parts of Delta.

What This Means for Young People

This is great news for young people in Delta, especially those who are passionate about sports. With better stadiums and facilities, athletes will be able to train under proper conditions, compete at higher levels, and possibly get noticed by national and international scouts.

The upgraded facilities will also help attract big competitions to Delta, which could create jobs, grow tourism, and bring in more investment to the state.

Support from the Sports Community

People across the sports community have praised the government’s move. They believe this is a big step toward putting Delta State back on the map as a major force in Nigerian and African sports.

By upgrading the Ughelli Stadium and focusing on grassroots development, the Delta State Government is showing that it’s serious about the future of sports—and the future of its youth.

Delta State is clearly taking the lead—and setting an example for other states to follow.
