In response to the ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria, Hon. Matthew Omonade, the member representing Ughelli North Constituency 1 at the Delta State House of Assembly, has delivered substantial financial support to his constituents. The lawmaker empowered 1,150 market women, artisans, and small-scale business owners in the Ughelli North council area with a total cash grant of N23 million.
The initiative, held at Omonade’s Ovara-Umusu community in Orogun, Ughelli North Local Government Area, aligns with his campaign promises and aims to alleviate economic hardship by providing critical financial aid to local traders and artisans.
Elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Omonade emphasized that his political journey is driven by a commitment to improve the lives of his constituents through effective representation and empowerment. Speaking to journalists, he highlighted his motivation to serve, saying, “I had a successful career as a legal practitioner, and I was inspired by the need for quality representation for our people.”
Omonade shared his belief that elected officials must use their positions to benefit the people, stating, “Leadership is about impacting lives positively, and if we can achieve that, we would see good governance in Nigeria.”
The grant is part of a broader effort to support small-scale businesses, with Omonade noting that many market vendors have minimal capital. He explained that even a modest cash infusion of N20,000 could significantly enhance their business operations.
Acknowledging the gesture, APC chieftain Chief Christopher Obiuwevbi praised Omonade’s commitment to his constituents, affirming that the grant demonstrates his genuine concern for their welfare. APC Chairman in Ughelli North, Hon. Obakpororo, also commended the initiative, noting its alignment with successful programs from the COVID-19 era.
Beneficiaries of the grant expressed deep gratitude, with Mrs. Alice Akpore and Madame Ufuoma Okparaverho stating, “Our honourable has boosted our businesses, and we are truly grateful. We promise to use this support wisely and pray for his continued success.”
