The Delta State Government has raised serious concern after a viral video revealed that individuals drilled holes into the newly resurfaced Okpanam Road to mount canopies for a social event.
The incident came to light after the footage was sent through Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s whistleblower line, prompting immediate action from the state authorities.
Following the Governor’s directive, the Commissioner for Works, Comrade Reuben Izeze, visited the site alongside the Divisional Police Officer and other government officials to inspect the damage and identify those involved. Some suspects were reportedly arrested at the scene but were later released on bail pending further investigation.
Commissioner Izeze condemned the act, warning that anyone found responsible will be prosecuted. He also confirmed that a comprehensive report on the incident would be submitted to Governor Oborevwori. The Commissioner urged residents to safeguard public infrastructure and promptly report anyone caught damaging community assets.
The troubling video, shared by TikTok user Wong Box Nigeria, captured a canopy set up in the middle of the newly upgraded road in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area. The content creator, who identified himself as a civil and structural engineer, highlighted markings on the asphalt and alleged that the family hosting a marriage ceremony drilled holes into the road to insert the canopy poles.
He explained that even small punctures on asphalt can weaken the structural integrity of a road. According to him, water seeping into the cracks can speed up deterioration and significantly reduce the road’s lifespan. He stressed that while many roads in Nigeria already suffer from poor construction, intentional acts of vandalism only worsen the situation and undermine government investments.
The video also called on the Okpanam Youth President, Hon. Lucky Anthony Okolo, to probe the matter and involve security agencies if necessary.
As of the time of filing this report, the Delta State Government has not released an official statement addressing the viral video. It is also unclear whether the family accused in the recording has responded to the allegations.
