DELSU Abraka Soars Under Prof. Asagba’s Visionary Leadership

By Churchill Oyowe

Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, is experiencing a transformative era under the leadership of its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Asagba. Within just four months in office, Prof. Asagba has spearheaded significant achievements in infrastructure, academic development, and student welfare. Notable among these are the completion of lecture theatres, hostels, roads, and administrative buildings across its campuses. The university has also expanded its academic offerings, strengthened global collaborations, and streamlined digital services—positioning itself as a model institution in Nigeria.

These milestones were highlighted during the recent 17th convocation ceremonies.

In a symbolic gesture of continuity, Prof. Asagba renamed the Faculty of Management Sciences Complex in honour of his predecessor, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga, acknowledging the latter’s transformative leadership and rapid completion of the complex within eleven months. “We are consolidating on a solid foundation,” Asagba said.

His administration is guided by a strategic vision focused on sustainable growth, technological advancement, and institutional efficiency. He aims to drive innovation, capacity building, and strategic partnerships to create a smarter and more responsive university system.

On academic excellence, Prof. Asagba has pledged to maintain and elevate standards through regular accreditation, staff development, and the introduction of globally relevant courses such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Cybersecurity. “We will not just expand programmes; we will raise standards,” he asserted.

Technological integration is central to his leadership. Plans are underway to deploy biometric systems for attendance tracking, enhanced security, and administrative efficiency—measures aimed at reducing bureaucracy and promoting transparency.

In terms of infrastructure, the university is investing heavily in modern facilities. New lecture halls, internal access roads, student hostels, and faculty buildings are either completed or under construction. “Our goal is to create learning environments that inspire and support excellence,” the VC stated.

During a convocation press conference, attention turned to the long-abandoned Senate Building. Prof. Asagba revealed that nearly all required materials are available and expressed optimism that, if the state government allows the university to take charge, the project could be completed promptly.

Financial sustainability is another priority. To reduce reliance on government subventions, DELSU is exploring new revenue streams—including a proposed microfinance bank and university-run agricultural ventures. “Financial autonomy begins with innovation in income generation,” said Asagba.

Power supply remains a major challenge, with the university spending approximately N60 million monthly on electricity, not including fuel costs for generators. To address this, Prof. Asagba is reviving plans to harness hydropower from the River Ethiope, an initiative previously explored but abandoned.

Student welfare is also front and center. The VC announced plans for new welfare packages, an improved transport system, and merit-based scholarships, reaffirming his commitment to inclusive academic and economic support for students.

Quality assurance remains a top priority. During a recent National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation visit, Asagba emphasized strict adherence to both national and international standards, vowing continuous review and improvement of academic programmes and infrastructure.

With his extensive experience—as former Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of DELSU Asaba—Prof. Asagba brings institutional insight, humility, and resolve to his role. Unlike many visions that remain aspirational, his is already taking shape through action.

With a collaborative leadership style and a future-focused agenda, DELSU is not only on a path to sustainable growth but also to leaving behind a legacy of excellence
