Cattle Breeders Complain About Poisoned Cows in Benue

The Benue State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has raised concerns about cows being poisoned in Agatu Local Government Area.

The leader of the group, Risku Muhammed, said that criminals in the area have been targeting their animals. Recently, 20 cows died after eating poisoned rice chaff in Ucha village. Muhammed said a farmer named Bawa Oneh tricked a herder into bringing his cows to graze on the poisoned food.

“Thirteen cows died instantly, while seven are being treated by a vet,” Muhammed said.

He also claimed that 200 cows were stolen a few days earlier. Fortunately, security officers were able to stop the thieves, arresting one suspect while others ran away.

The chairman of Agatu Local Government, Melvin James, confirmed the issue and said that investigations are ongoing. He added that Agatu has been peaceful because of a special peace committee working to prevent conflicts. However, he warned that some criminals are trying to cause trouble again.

James asked the state government to send more security officers to Agatu to help keep the peace.

The Benue State Police also confirmed the incident. Police spokesperson Catherine Anene said they are investigating, and one person has already been arrested.

Authorities are working to ensure that Agatu remains peaceful despite past clashes between herders and farmers.
