Beware! Fake Naira Notes Hit Coastal Areas in Akwa Ibom – NOA

Uyo, Akwa Ibom – August 2, 2025 The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Akwa Ibom State has raised the alarm over the increasing spread of fake N1000 notes in some parts of the state, especially in the coastal communities.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the State Director of NOA, Mr. Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, made this known on Friday while addressing the media. He warned residents, traders, and Point of Sale (POS) operators to be extra careful, as criminal gangs have started using counterfeit notes to defraud unsuspecting victims.

Mr. Mkpoutom said intelligence reports confirmed that fake currency syndicates have flooded areas like Udung Uko, Mbo, Oron, Okobo, and Ibeno with counterfeit N1000 notes. These fake notes come with batch numbers 364232 and 898248 and can be identified by blurred portraits, weak or missing watermarks, and irregular security features.

“These syndicates are very smart. They target busy markets and rush hours when people are in a hurry and may not carefully check the money being exchanged,” he explained.

He added that POS agents and market traders are the most common victims. The criminals take advantage of the crowded and fast-paced environment to push the fake notes without being noticed.

The NOA boss called on the public to be vigilant, double-check all N1000 notes, and report any suspicious transactions to security agencies. He also encouraged community members to support law enforcement efforts to catch and prosecute the scammers.

“We all must work together to stop this crime. If you notice anything suspicious, don’t keep quiet. Report it immediately,” Mkpoutom advised.

This warning is especially important for young entrepreneurs, market sellers, and POS operators who handle cash daily. Being alert and taking a few seconds to check each N1000 note could save you from big financial loss.

If you’re unsure how to identify a fake note, look out for:

  • Faded or unclear portrait of the Naira symbol
  • Missing or faint watermarks
  • Security strip that looks unusual
  • Different texture or color shade compared to real notes

Residents are urged to contact the nearest police station or NOA office to report any suspicious activity.

For your safety and that of your business, always check before you accept any cash. Fraudsters are getting smarter, but staying informed and alert is your best defense.
