Beware! Counterfeit Kiss Condoms Found Across Major Cities

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert warning Nigerians about counterfeit Kiss Condoms being sold in markets across the country. The agency emphasised that these fake condoms pose serious health risks and urged consumers to exercise caution.

The warning follows information received from MAH-DKT International Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation focused on contraceptive social marketing, which works to provide Nigerians with safe and affordable family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention options. According to the report, fake Kiss Condoms have been found in major markets including Onitsha Market, Idumota Market, Trade Fair Market, and markets in Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, Enugu, and other locations.

Kiss Condoms are male latex condoms designed to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV, gonorrhoea, and syphilis. NAFDAC warned that the counterfeit products are unregulated, poorly manufactured, and not sterilised, which could result in condom breakage, infections, allergic reactions, and a false sense of security.

To address the issue, NAFDAC has directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct market surveillance and remove counterfeit Kiss Condoms from circulation. The agency also advised distributors, retailers, healthcare workers, and caregivers to source products only from licensed suppliers and carefully check the authenticity and physical condition of condoms before sale or use.

Consumers and healthcare professionals are encouraged to report suspected counterfeit or substandard medical products to the nearest NAFDAC office, via the toll-free line 0800-162-3322, or by email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng. Adverse events or side effects from medicinal products or devices can also be reported through NAFDAC’s e-reporting platforms, the Med-Safety app available on Android and iOS, or via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng.

This alert will also be shared with the World Health Organisation’s Global Surveillance and Monitoring System (GSMS) to enhance international tracking of counterfeit medical products.
