At 34, Delta Must Diversify Economy — NUJ

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has congratulated the people of Delta as the state marks its 34th anniversary. Delta was created on August 27, 1991, from the defunct Bendel State, which itself was a combination of the old Benin and Delta provinces.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Churchill Oyowe, and Acting Secretary, Josephine Omodior, the NUJ said the state has, over the last three decades, become one of Nigeria’s most strategic states, contributing heavily to the country’s oil revenue while also showcasing a rich cultural heritage.

The Council noted that successive governments in Delta have made progress in education, healthcare, infrastructure, sports, youth and women development, even as challenges remain.

It particularly praised the current administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his MORE Agenda—which stands for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security. The NUJ highlighted his efforts in improving infrastructure, strengthening healthcare services, and empowering youths, widows, and the elderly.

However, the Union stressed the need for Delta to diversify its economy beyond oil and federal allocations. It said agriculture, where the state has a clear advantage, should be developed as a major source of food security, jobs, and industrial growth.

The NUJ reminded the government of the Maputo Declaration of 2003, which recommended that at least 10 percent of national and state budgets be allocated to agriculture. It warned that farming cannot thrive without security, urging local and state governments to do more to protect farmers from herders’ incursions, crop destruction, and kidnappings, which threaten rural livelihoods.

“At 34, Delta must consolidate its gains and courageously confront its gaps. A secure, agriculturally productive, and industrially vibrant Delta is possible,” the statement said.

The NUJ also saluted the resilience of Deltans at home and abroad, the vision of past and present leaders, and the ongoing work of the Oborevwori administration. It expressed hope for a future where Delta’s growth is driven by peace, productivity, and prosperity beyond oil.
