APC Not a Safe Haven! Sheriff Demands Okowa’s Investigation

In Delta State, tension is rising as young people and community leaders are demanding answers from the government over how ₦1.3 trillion—yes, ₦1.3 trillion—meant for oil-producing communities has allegedly been mismanaged. At the forefront of this growing protest is Comrade Mulade Sheriff, a well-known advocate for environmental and community development, who is boldly calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to tell the people what’s really going on.

What’s the Fuss About?

Nigeria gives oil-producing states a special bonus called the 13% oil derivation fund. This money is meant to support communities that suffer the most from oil drilling—places where land is damaged, water is polluted, and traditional jobs like fishing and farming are almost impossible.

But here’s the problem: Even though huge sums of money have been given to Delta State over the years, the communities still look abandoned. No proper roads, no clean water, no decent schools or hospitals. People are now asking, “Where did the money go?”

Sheriff Sounds the Alarm

Comrade Mulade Sheriff, former chairman of Kokodiagbene Community in the Gbaramatu Kingdom, is calling on EFCC boss Mr. Ola Olukoyede to investigate how the funds were spent—without fear, favor, or political manipulation.

In a recent press release, Sheriff warned against letting politics get in the way of justice. He was especially concerned about rumors that the defection of former Delta State Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa from the PDP to APC might be used as a political shield.

“We strongly believe that the recent defection of former Governor Okowa must not be used as a bargaining chip to suppress justice,” Sheriff said.

In simple terms: Changing parties shouldn’t mean escaping punishment.

Why This Matters

Sheriff, who is also the Chairman of the Association of Host Communities, says this issue isn’t just about Delta—it’s about the future of Nigeria. He believes that if leaders can just jump to the ruling party and avoid investigation, then corruption becomes the new normal.

“The idea that corruption charges could be dropped simply because a high-profile politician joins the ruling party is a betrayal of public trust,” he added.

He’s also urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prove his administration truly cares about fighting corruption, creating jobs, improving security, and making life better for everyday Nigerians.

“The world is watching. We cannot afford a scenario where political loyalty is rewarded with immunity from prosecution,” he warned.

This story is becoming more than just a political scandal. It’s turning into a serious test of Nigeria’s democracy, especially for young people who feel left behind by a system that often seems to protect the powerful and ignore the poor.

For the students, youth leaders, and upcoming professionals in Delta and beyond, this is a moment to ask: Who is really fighting for us? And will anyone be held accountable for misusing the money meant for our future?

The fight for justice over the ₦1.3 trillion oil fund is not just about the past—it’s about whether the government is serious about fairness, development, and giving young Nigerians a real chance at a better life.
