The Upper Chambers of the Nigerian Senate have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a full-scale war on bandits terrorizing the country.
The motion for the call was moved by Uba Sani, a senator representing Kaduna Central, on Tuesday.
The senator draw the attention of the house to the attack that occurred around the Kateri-Rijana area of Kaduna on Monday, a train that have almost reached its final destination in Rigasa was bombed by gunmen. Some passengers were killed while others suffered wounds.
The senator asked the security forces to reassemble their strategies to come up with powerful solutions to the danger of banditry and terrorism.
Criticizing the tactics adopted by security forces in dealing with the attacks, the lawmaker wondered why final actions haven’t been taken against bandits months after being announced, terrorists.
While contributing to a debate on the motion sponsored by Sani on Tuesday, Gabriel Suswam, senator representing Benue northeast, said the country is under attack and critical measures should be taken to address insecurity in the country.
“It is time enough for the appropriate authority to have taken decisive actions to address the insecurity in our country,” Suswam said.
This is the time that we as a senate meet with the leadership of this country to sit down and talk.”
Danjuma Laah, senator representing Kaduna south, on his part said if Nasir el-Rufai, Kaduna governor, is not capable of solving the security problems in the state, he should seek help.
“In the whole country, the issue of Kaduna state is the worst. There must be an urgent action immediately to solve all the problems,” Leah said.
“If the governor is short of manpower, let him cry out.”
The motion was adopted after Senate President Ahmad Lawan put it to a voice vote.
In the motion, the upper legislative chamber asked the army and the air force to sustain their operations on the enclaves of these gunmen.
It also asked the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials for the victims of the attack.
On Monday, Golden Nation Blog reported that armed bandits bombed a Kaduna-Abuja train conveying hundreds of passengers.
The incident came two days after armed gangs invaded Kaduna International Airport, killing aviation workers and leaving many others wounded.
The Senate urged the Nigerian military to put special focus on the vicinity of Nigerian Airports, especially the Abuja Airport.
It also charged relevant government agencies to step up their information-gathering device to forestall this kind of occurrence.
