NDC Rejects Social Media Primary Results, Says Official Outcome Pending

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has cautioned Nigerians against believing election results currently circulating on social media, insisting that the party has not officially announced the outcome of its nationwide primary elections.

The primaries, conducted across the country on Saturday, were held to select candidates for various elective positions ahead of the next general election. Following the exercise, several posts appeared online claiming to reveal the winners and losers of the contests.

Among the reports circulating on X were claims that some prominent aspirants, including former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, failed to secure their party tickets. However, the NDC has said such reports should not be regarded as authentic.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, stressed that only the National Executive Council (NEC) has the authority to announce the official results of the primaries. He described the online results as unofficial and urged members of the public to disregard them.

“The general public is hereby urged to disregard the various results circulating on social media as the outcome of the nationwide primaries conducted by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on the 28th and 29th of May, 2026,” the statement said.

According to the Director, the results of the primaries are currently with the party’s National Executive Council, which remains the only body authorised to officially release them.

He further disclosed that the NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson, has called a NEC meeting to review the outcome of the primaries. Members of the party’s various organs are expected to arrive in Abuja on Tuesday for a pre-NEC meeting, while the main NEC session is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

The director added that the official results would be made public after the party submits the names of its candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The general public and stakeholders will be informed of the results of our primaries when we send the list of candidates to fly our party’s flag to the INEC,” the statement added.

The party did not conduct primaries for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senate seat or its presidential ticket. This development effectively cleared the way for Peter Obi to emerge as the sole aspirant and eventual presidential candidate of the NDC.
