The Oyo State Police Command has intercepted a truck loaded with items suspected to be explosive devices during a routine stop-and-search operation in Saki, raising security concerns in the area.
The interception, which took place during an intelligence-driven operation, was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka. He described the operation as a major success in the command’s ongoing efforts to prevent crime and ensure public safety.
According to the police, the truck was immediately stopped, secured, and taken into custody after officers noticed suspicious materials during the search. The items, believed to be potentially dangerous, were promptly isolated to prevent any risk to the public.
DSP Olayinka said the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Femi Haruna, ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation after receiving a briefing on the incident.
He explained that specialised operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit were deployed to safely handle and secure the suspected materials.
The items are currently undergoing detailed forensic examination to determine their exact composition, level of risk, and possible intended use. Investigators are also working to establish where the materials originated from and their intended destination.
The driver of the truck has been arrested and is currently in custody, where he is cooperating with investigators as police work to uncover all circumstances surrounding the interception.
The Oyo State Police Command expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for his continued support, strategic leadership, and operational guidance, which it said have strengthened intelligence-led policing across the country.
The command reassured residents of Saki and other parts of the state that there is no cause for panic, stressing that adequate security measures are in place to protect lives and property.
It also urged members of the public to remain calm and vigilant, while promising to provide updates as investigations into the incident continue.
