The Chief Executive Officer of Benrotimi Farms and Executive Director of Grosvenor Global Service Ltd, Mr. Benjamin Olarotimi, has shared a compelling story of resilience, growth, and purpose—one that reflects the realities of entrepreneurship, the power of education, and the importance of staying true to one’s vision.
Speaking during an interview with Golden Nation Multimedia, Mr. Olarotimi reflected on how his journey into farming and business began, the challenges he faced along the way, and the lessons he hopes young people can learn from his experience.
Starting Small in Agriculture
According to Mr. Olarotimi, his journey into agriculture began modestly. Without significant financial backing, he ventured into catfish production, supplying fish mainly to market women. This small-scale operation lasted for several years and formed the foundation of what later became Benrotimi Farms.
“I didn’t start big,” he explained. “I started with catfish production and sold to market women. I did that consistently for years.”
As challenges such as disease outbreaks arose, he refused to give up. Instead, his passion for agriculture pushed him to expand and diversify into other livestock farming ventures, gradually increasing the scope of his business.
Recognizing that the business had grown beyond its initial stage, he made the decision to register the company formally, marking a new chapter in his entrepreneurial journey.
Challenges, Doubts, and Mental Strength
Mr. Olarotimi acknowledged that the journey was not easy. Like many entrepreneurs, he faced financial difficulties, uncertainty, and moments of doubt. He noted that farming, as a career choice, also came with emotional pressure, as people around him questioned his decision.
“There were challenges from friends and people around me,” he said. “Some didn’t understand why I chose farming. But you don’t need everyone’s approval.”
According to him, success requires passion, focus, and mental strength, especially when others doubt your choices.
“In every business, there are ups and downs,” he added. “You just have to stay strong and keep going. Every successful business started from somewhere.”
First Exposure to Professional Business Culture
He also recalled his first professional business experience, which exposed him to structured corporate environments and disciplined work culture. Walking into a formal business setting for the first time opened his eyes to professionalism, time management, and accountability.
“I saw how organized everything was,” he said. “Meetings were structured, offices closed at specific times, and everyone took responsibility seriously.”
Although he already had employment at the time, he made a deliberate decision to step back and focus on learning.
“I needed to open my mind and acquire the kind of knowledge modern businesses require,” he explained.
Lagos Business School: A Turning Point
One of the most significant turning points in his journey was his decision to attend Lagos Business School (LBS). Inspired by stories of people who had attended the institution and transformed their leadership approach, Mr. Olarotimi conducted personal research before enrolling.
“Lagos Business School changed my mindset and approach to business,” he said. “The knowledge I gained gave me courage and confidence.”
He added that the impact of the program extended beyond graduation, as mentors and facilitators continued to offer guidance and support.
The journey, however, was demanding. He described frequent travel between Delta State and Lagos, financial pressure, and the stress of balancing academics with business responsibilities.
“It wasn’t easy,” he admitted. “You are paying to acquire knowledge, and the stress was real. But if you truly want to grow, you must be ready to sacrifice.”
Defining Success Through Continuous Growth
For Mr. Olarotimi, success is not defined by titles or certificates alone. Instead, he believes in continuous improvement and hard work.
“Education gives you a higher level of exposure,” he said. “But you must keep working and upgrading yourself. Growth is a continuous process.”
A Message to Young People
When asked what advice he would give to young people who feel limited by their background or financial status, Mr. Olarotimi encouraged them not to give up on their dreams.
“Don’t let your starting point define your future,” he said. “I always use myself as an example. It wasn’t easy for me from the beginning, and I started even before I had anything.”
He stressed that belief in oneself, passion, and consistency are key to success.
“As long as you have passion for what you are doing, there is always a reward for hard work,” he said. “Business is full of opportunities. When your opportunity comes, your level will change for the better.”
The Legacy He Hopes to Leave
Speaking on the legacy he hopes to leave behind, Mr. Olarotimi said his goal is to inspire others through his actions rather than words.
“My legacy is simple,” he said. “I want people who look up to me to understand that this is the way to go—through hard work, integrity, and faith in God.”
He emphasized that mindset plays a crucial role in shaping one’s future.
“Just like working under a master, if the mindset is wrong, the outcome will be wrong,” he explained. “But if your mindset is right, your life will move in the right direction.”
He concluded by saying that his journey is a living testimony, one that he hopes will encourage others to believe in themselves, stay focused, and keep moving forward despite challenges.
“I will keep doing my best,” he said. “And I will leave the rest to God.”
