ASABA – The Delta State Police Command has arrested a prison escapee suspected of being responsible for the murder of 26-year-old Christabel Egedefe in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest in an official statement. According to him, the suspect was involved in a robbery at Christabel’s home on 23 October 2025, during which he killed her after she refused to hand over the keys to her motorcycle. He also fled with her mobile phones.
Edafe said the suspect later confessed that he escaped from the Oko Correctional Centre during the End SARS jailbreak of 2020.
On October 24, 2025, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Agbor Division received information that a man was attempting to sell a suspected stolen phone. Officers were immediately deployed to the location, where the suspect was arrested.
During interrogation, the suspect initially lied, claiming he brought the phone from Libya. However, the truth began to unfold when the phone rang, and the caller identified herself as the sister of the phone’s real owner—Christabel Egedefe.
Armed with this information, the DPO and his team visited Christabel’s home, where they found her dead in her apartment.
Edafe explained that the suspect first tried to implicate the victim’s father by claiming he had instructed him to carry out the murder. But after further interrogation, the suspect admitted the story was false.
He eventually confessed to robbing Christabel on October 23 and killing her when she refused to surrender her motorcycle keys. He also stole her phone.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is a serial murderer. He was reportedly part of the gang that raped and murdered Uwaila Omozuwa, a 200-level University of Benin student who was killed inside a church in 2020 while reading.
The suspect admitted he escaped lawful custody during the 2020 Oko prison jailbreak that occurred amid the End SARS protests.
He is currently in police custody as further investigations continue.
Authorities say additional details will be provided as the investigation progresses.
