Allegations of Rice Palliative Diversion Rock Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Detained

The Nigerian Army is currently investigating Brigadier General M.A. Sadiq, the former commander of 3 Brigade Kano, following serious allegations of misconduct. He is accused of diverting rice palliatives meant for soldiers and selling military equipment, including generator sets and operational vehicles, to scrap yards. The military police have detained him in Abuja as investigations continue.

According to sources, the rice was provided by the Defence Headquarters to be distributed to soldiers as palliatives on at least three occasions. However, Brigadier General Sadiq reportedly only shared 5kg of rice with the soldiers once and allegedly sold the remaining supplies. In addition to the rice diversion, he is accused of removing a MIKANO heavy-duty generator from the Military Training Camp in Falgore, Kano, and selling it as scrap.

Brigadier General Sadiq has been replaced by Brigadier General A.M. Tukur, a former registrar of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), who is now in charge of 3 Brigade Kano.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed that Brigadier General Sadiq is being investigated for “administrative discrepancies” during his tenure. He assured the public that the Nigerian Army, known for its discipline and accountability, will conduct a fair and thorough investigation.

Major General Nwachukwu emphasized the Army’s zero tolerance for misconduct, stating, “The Nigerian Army being a self-regulatory institution founded on the bedrock of discipline, justice, and accountability, has zero tolerance for indiscipline and will therefore not condone any form of misconduct or illicit actions.”

The military is expected to take appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation. A court-martial could be held if Brigadier General Sadiq is found guilty of the allegations. The Army has promised to handle the case with integrity and ensure that justice is served.
