In a tragic accident, the Edo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has rescued six individuals and recovered two bodies after a commercial bus plunged into the Ovia River on Thursday evening. The accident occurred at around 4:20 pm, involving a bus travelling from Lagos to Port Harcourt.
Edo FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Cyril Mathew, confirmed that more passengers remain trapped inside the river. Divers have been engaged to assist with recovery efforts, although ongoing negotiations have delayed their deployment due to a N2 million fee requested for the operation.
Mathew provided further details, stating that the driver of the bus lost control following a brake failure, veered into the opposite lane in an attempt to avoid vehicles ahead, and eventually plunged into the river after hitting a pavement.
Rescue efforts began immediately on Thursday and continued into Friday, with the likelihood of finding more survivors now slim.
