Two bills, Social Investment Programme 2023 which seeks to provide for effective management and implementation of conditional cash Transfers for all the vulnerable and less privileged, and a bill to recognize and reward individuals and organizations with merit awards have passed its first reading at the Delta State House Assembly.
The Social Investment Programme Bill 2023 was sponsored by His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori while the Delta Merit Award Bill 2023 was sponsored by the Majority Leader and member representing Aniocha North Constituency in the 8th Assembly, Hon. Engr. Emeka Emmanuel Nwaobi, during the Tuesday plenary.
Both Bills were unanimously supported and have been suggested to the Committee for further legislative action.
Speaking with journalists after the plenary, Hon. Nwaobi explained that the merit award bill seeks to recognize Deltans who have done exceedingly well to save lives and properties in their chosen careers.
He further mentioned that the bill also recognizes those who have done very well but possibly were not opportune to be given such an award before they died.
According to the lawmaker, the award is specifically centered on individuals and organizational actions that are capable of saving lives. Those who do things extraordinary or people who go out of their way to save lives and properties.
Describing the context, the Majority Leader said the bill would serve as a morale booster to Deltans in their various chosen career, putting in that when you recognize someone who has excelled in his career, it challenges others to do their best knowing that they will be rewarded too.
Hon. Nwaobi said the bill also specifies the processes of those who will be awarded and it’s open to everyone, both the rich and the poor will be considered provided they meet the criteria.
“Anyone who wants to nominate someone they feel deserves the award will write through the Secretary of the Council as they will scrutinize every single name or organization that will be sent to them for approval.”
“I urge Deltans to keep striving to do extraordinary things that will help to protect lives and properties in the state.
