On Sunday night in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, an important meeting was held by leaders of a big political group called the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). One of the biggest surprises at the meeting was the presence of Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Even though Wike had disagreements with the party in the past, he showed up to help discuss how to fix the party’s problems.
The meeting took place at the home of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and many current and former state governors were there. These are important people who help lead different states in Nigeria.
Governors who attended included:
- Bala Mohammed (Bauchi)
- Agbu Kefas (Taraba)
- Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa)
- Dauda Lawal (Zamfara)
- Ademola Adeleke (Osun)

- Gabriel Suswam (Benue)
- Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano)
- Adamu Muazu (Bauchi)
- And several others
The acting PDP chairman, Umar Damagum, was also at the meeting.
Why Was the Meeting Important?
The PDP leaders came together to talk about how to fix the party’s internal problems. The party has been facing disagreements and losing members to the rival party, the APC (All Progressives Congress). Even Sheriff Oborevwori, the governor of Delta State, recently left the PDP to join the APC.
To prepare for the party’s future, especially the 2027 elections, the leaders created a special 7-person committee. This committee is led by Bukola Saraki and includes other top politicians. Their job is to plan a peaceful national executive council (NEC) meeting, which will be held on May 27, and get ready for the party’s big national convention.
After the meeting, Saraki posted on social media (X) saying the meeting was productive and full of good ideas.
“We had a fruitful discussion on the party’s challenges and future,” he wrote.
The PDP hopes that this meeting will help bring its members back together and make the party strong again for future elections.
