Three people have been arrested for allegedly chopping off the nose and tongue of a 28-year-old widow in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
On November 18, 2020, police said that the victim allegedly refused to marry a relative of her in-laws as per their demands.
The widow has been identified as Guddi Devi, a resident of Jagiron Ki Dhani in the Sankra block of Jaisalmer.
She was admitted to a hospital in Jodhpur for treatment, said Kanta Singh, station house officer at Sankra police station in charge of the case.
According to the First Information Report filed by the victim’s brother Baseer Khan, Guddi married Koje Khan about six years back who died a year after the marriage.
After her husband’s death, Guddi continued to live with her in-laws as per Indian tradition.
However, Guddi’s sisters-in-law began forcing her to remarry another man from their family, which she refused.
On November 17, the woman’s sister-in-law came to her house, with a couple of people, including Janu Khan, whom they were asking Guddi to marry.
Angered by her repeated refusal to remarry, they attacked her with a sharp weapon and chopped off her tongue and nose.
Based on the widow’s brother’s complaint, three people identified as Janu Khan, Anwar Khan, and Nawab Khan were arrested by the police.
