Why we need to legalize Indian hemp in Nigeria – Akeredolu

The Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, has said there is a need for Cannabis Sativa to be legalized in Nigeria.

He said there are a lot of benefits that could be derived from it particularly in the area of medicine and also as a source of foreign exchange to the nation.

Akeredolu made this known on Ondo State Radiovision Corporation during a live radio and television interview on Thursday while speaking at the commemoration of his 100 days in office for his second tenure.

During the interview, Akeredolu stated that there is nothing wrong with legalizing the cultivation of Cannabis for medicinal purposes.

He said we are only shooting ourselves in the foot because cannabis serves as foreign exchange for people outside the country adding that people want it, even the pharmacies want to develop it.

While speaking, the Governor narrated how he once traveled to Thailand to study the cultivation of cannabis for pharmaceutical use.

He said, “I traveled out of here and I was in Thailand to study the cultivation of cannabis for pharmaceutical use. We did all these; we even went there with the then chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, maybe he came and said what he went for was for a different thing but that was why we went there. I felt that let us look at the way they did it over there.

According to him “Everybody has a drug problem and the most country has the drug problem too but we are having it here, it is not as pronounced here as in other places but there are ways they went about these things that those who are involved in drugs; those who are selling, those who are exporting had other ways of doing things that they had to leave it. So, when we talk about cultivation, we are saying a monitored one, in which NDLEA will have an office (near the farms).”

Also, while expressing satisfaction over his 100 days in office, the Governor said his administration has been able to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Ondo State despite the inadequate funds.

He also said there will be zero tolerance for uncompleted projects stating that he only embarks on critical projects that will alleviate the welfare of his people.
