Why Nigeria’s Passport Lacks Value – Goodluck Jonathan Speaks Out

Abuja, Nigeria – Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said that Nigerian leaders in government and the judiciary contribute to the country’s bad image just like internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo Boys.”

Jonathan made this statement on Saturday during the annual colloquium organized by the Haske Satumari Foundation in Abuja. Speaking on the topic “Promoting Social Change and Development through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,” he blamed government officials for Nigeria’s problems and warned that their actions have serious consequences for all citizens.

Government, Not Just Yahoo Boys, Hurts Nigeria’s Image

Jonathan pointed out that many Nigerians believe internet fraudsters are the main reason the country has a poor reputation internationally. However, he argued that decisions made by the executive (president and ministers), the legislature (lawmakers), and the judiciary (judges) are just as responsible.

“Why is our passport not valued? Why don’t Nigerians get the respect they deserve at international airports?”* Jonathan asked. *”Many think it’s only because of Yahoo Boys, but that’s not the full story. Government actions also play a big role.”

He explained that no foreign investor would want to put money in a country where judges are influenced by politicians or where government officials can interfere with court rulings.

“No businessman will invest in a country where the judiciary is compromised, where government officials can dictate to judges what to do,” Jonathan said. “That is a big risk. If we want to build a nation for our children and grandchildren, we must do what is right, even if it is difficult.”

Concerns Over Nigeria’s Leaders

Jonathan’s comments come at a time when Nigerian leaders are facing serious criticisms both inside and outside the country.

President Bola Tinubu has been under pressure after reports about his past, including alleged involvement in a drug case and certificate forgery. He has even hired lobbyists in the United States to help clear his reputation.

Similarly, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been in the news after Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from Kogi State accused him of sexual harassment. She has been speaking about her experience on international news platforms.

The Bigger Picture

Jonathan’s warning reminds Nigerians that corruption and bad governance affect everyone, not just those directly involved. He urged leaders to act responsibly to improve Nigeria’s reputation and create a better future for the next generation.

His message is clear: If Nigerian leaders want respect for their country, they must lead with honesty and fairness.
