Imagine being part of a football team that you helped create, but after some years, you feel like the team no longer follows the rules you believe in. That’s how former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai feels about his former political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
El-Rufai has decided to leave APC and join a new team, the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He said that when he helped form APC in 2013, he believed in its goals, but in the last two years, he noticed things were not going well. He tried to talk to the leaders about fixing the problems, but they didn’t listen.
Since he no longer agrees with how APC is being run, he has decided to leave and find a party that shares his ideas. He hopes that SDP will be a better place for him to continue working on making Nigeria better.
Now that El-Rufai has joined SDP, he also wants to encourage other political leaders to unite and challenge APC in future elections. He believes this will give Nigerians more options to choose from when voting for their leaders.
For now, Nigerians will be watching to see what happens next in politics as more leaders make their decisions before the 2027 elections.
