When Voices Become Blessings: Inside St. Peter’s Asaba 2025 Choir Week

The Cathedral Choir of St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral, Asaba, brought the city to life with a week of thanksgiving, service, and joyful celebration as they marked their 2025 Choir Week under the theme “Praising God with Your Talents” (Matthew 25:14-30).

The week-long programme, which ran from Monday, October 20 to Sunday, October 26, 2025, was filled with spiritually enriching and socially engaging activities that reflected gratitude, unity, and the purposeful use of God-given gifts in His service.

The celebration began with a compassionate outreach to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, where members of the Cathedral Choir donated food items, toiletries, and cash gifts to seven patients. The visit, described by many as “deeply touching,” showcased the choir’s commitment to expressing God’s love beyond the church walls.

Tuesday was set aside for prayer and fasting, as members sought divine guidance for the week’s activities. The day concluded with a spirit-filled rehearsal session that combined worship and musical preparation for the events ahead.

On Wednesday, the choir joined the congregation for a Service of Songs in honour of the late Sir Lawrence Okafor, a devoted church member. The evening was filled with heartfelt hymns and solemn choral renditions that celebrated a life dedicated to faith and service.

Thursday was devoted to a final dress rehearsal, ensuring all choristers were musically and visually prepared for the climax of the week. The rehearsal also strengthened teamwork and coordination among the members.

One of the week’s most exciting highlights came on Friday with a novelty football match between the Cathedral Choir (Female), Asaba and St. Philip’s Choir (Female).

In a spirited encounter that thrilled spectators, the Cathedral Choir team emerged victorious with an impressive 5–1 win. Captain Mrs Okafor led by example, scoring a remarkable hat-trick (three goals). The match drew a large turnout of supporters, families, and friends, creating an atmosphere of joy, unity, and healthy competition that extended the choir’s harmony from the choir stalls to the football field.

The weekend began with a vibrant picnic and fellowship at the Asaba Garden Resort, where members enjoyed a day of laughter, games, dancing, and sharing of gifts. It was a moment of relaxation and bonding, strengthening friendships within the choir family.

The grand finale came on Sunday with a Thanksgiving Service at St. Peter’s Cathedral. The choristers, dressed in their elegant robes, processed into the church with songs of praise and adoration.

The service featured inspiring anthems, special hymns, and the induction of new choir members. The atmosphere was charged with joy and gratitude as the congregation joined the choir in offering thanks to God for a successful and impactful week.

The success of the 2025 Choir Week was attributed to the dedication and effective coordination of Mrs Beauty Nwanne Okwechime, Chairperson of the Planning Committee. Her leadership and attention to detail ensured a seamless celebration.

Special appreciation was also extended to the Choirmasters, Kenneth Obiorah Isichei and Nnamdi Tony Nwaguma, for their outstanding musical direction; Precious John, the talented organist; and the Choir Chairman, Bassey Asiekwu, for his consistent commitment to the choir’s growth and unity.

The 2025 Choir Week of St. Peter’s Cathedral Choir, Asaba, was a remarkable success that perfectly embodied the theme, “Praising God with Your Talents.”

From the hospital visitation to the closing Thanksgiving service, every activity reflected a heartfelt dedication to using God’s gifts in His service. The week served as a reminder that talents, when devoted to God, become instruments of love, healing, and joy to the world.
