What we demanded are not new – Okowa tells critics over restructuring

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has said the decision of the Southern Governor’s Forum to ban open grazing and call for restructuring is only to re-echo the voices of the people.

Okowa explained that the things they demanded are not new stating that it is just the voice of the people that they are echoing.

The governor made this assertion during the inauguration session and empowerment of the constituents of the Minority Leader of House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Godwin Elumelu, in Asaba on Saturday.

Okowa reaffirmed that the ban on open grazing and the call for restructuring was only geared towards strengthening the unity of the country stating that the Southern Governors met on Tuesday in Delta State to discuss fundamental problems, comprising the farmers-herders crisis which has caused pandemonium across the country.

According to Okowa comments, he said it is so unfortunate that when he read from the papers that somebody says they ought not to talk about certain things, despite being elected by the people.

Okowa made an explanation saying that if the voice of your people has been heard and they continue to talk and you are shying away as an elected person for giving further voice to their voices, then you ought not to be in that position that you occupied.

He said the issue of restructuring should not be condemned because they believe in the unity of the country and they take a step to address certain things that were needed to strengthening that unity as elected Governors and also as people.

He said the issue of restructuring is widespread and integrating as we may have different views, different approaches to the issue but added, when we all sit at the table and dialogue, we will be able to agree on what is best for Nigeria and what is good for the parts of it.

Also, he added that the issue of restructuring has been on the table for so long adding that both PDP and APC have endorsed it.
